A very special place
Totally not your run-of-the-mill. A charming boutique hotel. Lovely hosts and a very comfortable sleep.
A Hidden Gem ~ Full of Decadent Luxury & Style ~
If you like a mix of history, antiquity and tranquility then this hotel has it all. Unique, interesting and individual. The Red room was a great choice, large accommodation, plush fittings, lovely bathroom, the list goes on. If your having a nights stay or a week this is the place to go. Breakfast was just right also. The staff were great, couldn’t do enough for you, very helpful. I don’t often give a 10/10 but this is the one that gets it. Will definitely stay again in 2025. Thanks to Ian and Alex.
Outstanding, Intimate Hotel
Ye Spotted Dogge is more like an upscale guest house than a hotel, with a storied history dating back to the sixteenth century and 21st century upgrades that make it a pleasure to stay in. Each room is spacious and comfortable, though tall people should mind the beams in the ceiling! And the public spaces, particularly the bar and breakfast room, are just gorgeous. Best of all are the owners and staff who went out of their way to make our stay supremely comfortable and welcoming.
Perfect
The hotel is very nice and quiet. We have visited Portsmouth for my daughter wedding. As there was many things to organize I have got amazing support from Ian and thank him for his hospitality. Rooms are super and fantastic breakfast
Great Hospitality
We found the whole experience of staying here was amazing. The history ,the ambience, the room , thr bed and pillows were fantastic. This is definitely a little jewel in Portsmouth and we will be back. Thank you to Alex who made us feel at home from start to finish of our stay.
An historic experience
This is so much more than just staying somewhere, it feels like a mini stately home which is a privilege to experience.Personal service is a rare treat too. Give it a try!
Friendly & relaxing place to stay
Warm welcome. Comfy room, spacious bathroom, plenty of hot water. Great breakfast. Very useful to have access to visitors' parking permit. Look forward to another stay.
Amazing
This beautiful guest house, run by the super friendly and helpful Ian and Alex is nothing short of perfect. Our visit from start to finish was exceptional. The beautiful historic bar, the breakfastroom and the bedrooms were fantastic.Best nights sleep I've had in a long while the bedding was supesoft and the king size bed oh so comfortable. The history inside these walls dates back hundreds of years and was so interesting.Felt very privileged to have stayed.
Very charming
I arrived later than expected but no problem at all. My room was exactly as pictured online, only better. Very clean and fresh smelling bedding and towels. An amazing breakfast. If ever in Portsmouth again I definitely know where to stay. Only able to give five stars but would love to give more. Thank you for the pleasant stay.
Best place ever!
Stayed in a lot of great hotels in my life…none compares to this place. We will be back.
Fantastic
Great welcome. Excellent assistance with parking. Excellent bar with great conversation. Nice tips on restaurants and sites. And finally a great breakfast. Every thing was brilliant

Great stay.Ian and company were very interactive with guests and met all requests plus some. A thoroughly enjoyable stay!!
Hidden Gem wonderful hosts
We stayed for two nights at Ye Old Spotted Dogge before a crossing over to Normandy.Rather than just waiting out for our crossing we enjoyeda fabulous stay at Ye Old Spotted Dogge. Ian and Alex were the perfect hosts. We loved this lovingly restored historic building, it was just charming! Super comfy beds too. Thanks.
Fabulously unique and charming!
We had the best time here. Our room was like something out of a fairy tale. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful during our stay. The patio garden area is beautiful and the private bar was such a wonderful surprise! Really enjoyed meeting some locals and felt right at home. We were absolutely spoiled here and we would not change a thing!
A special place!
We spent two nights at Ye Spotted Dogge, a beautiful and historic >500 year old boutique hotel that is an easy walk to the naval yard, ferry and hovercraft terminals.Ian, the proprietor, is a wonderful host and Alex the barman was a pleasure as well. The small bar (and larger garden area) are frequented by some local neighbors and it was nice to meet folks with local knowledge, all of whom were very welcoming and friendly.Great breakfast and a wonderfully decorated room and hotel.
Great stay
Beautiful hotel, steeped in history. Great hosts, polite and super helpful, made our stay hassle free. Many thanks
A hidden gem
Our stay was booked for the Victorious Festival. Ian and Alex made us very welcome, great breakfast, comfortable bed, blackout blinds for a good sleep... Efficient communication with Ian before our arrival re check-in and parking.Would definitely recommend this little hidden gem.
Excellent stay
We stayed at Ye Spotted Dogge for one Friday evening. Ian and his Team were very friendly and helpful and the hotel is an amazing place to stay at. Full of history; an excellent bar; beautiful courtyard garden; and, the bedroom was well appointed and comfortable. We will definitely visit again!
The best stay
This is a beautiful hidden gem. Just had my 4th stay here. Beautiful rooms and a lovely garden whereyou can have a drink and relax. Alex who has always welcomed us upon arrival is soo friendly and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast is soo nice. A full spread of gorgeous food, fresh fruit and cereals etc.it’s quiet and peaceful and the perfect location. I cannot rate this place enough. See you next time!
A Rare Find
Well positioned, very comfortable, extremely interesting history and attentive and engaging staff. A highlight of our time in UK and France. Could not fault it.
Wonderful Boutique Hotel
We had a fantastic time at this hotel. The host Ian and his staff could not have been more accommodating! The hotel has some amazing history (no spoilers) and has been tastefully restored and updated with modern conveniences - bathrooms are wonderful and great for couples - plenty of room! Central location in Portsmouth and easy walking distance to the area's attractions and venues. 5 star experience!
Fabulous!
This was easily the nicest stay we had on this 2 week trip to England. The inn is beautifully decorated and chock a block with history. The room was comfortable and complete with amenities. The hosts were personable and very helpful. Highly recommended!
Fantastic
I highly recommend this beautiful small boutique hotel. The interior is very authentic. The rooms are beautiful and most of all, the service is at the best level possible. We will come back. Thank you.
Great Place
What a great place, everyone really helpful, super comfy room....a place that really stands out from the crowd
Fantastic experience
Accommodation formidableElegant and tasteful environment. Plenty of history.Excellent service and attention.
Fabulous stay
We could only stay for 1 night and booked the Red Room. Extremely comfortable.Lovely continental breakfast and really cosy bar for evening pre- dinner drinks.
Excellent
Made to feel very welcome and looked after very well. Lunch reservation made for us locally (2 couples). As in previous years, great time for New Year's Eve and a very comfortable stay for us and another couple. A further couple had booked a bed across the road but were able to join us for breakfast.Plenty of choice for breakfast with attentive but not intrusive service. We said on leaving that we want to book again and certainly for New Year's Eve.Thank you very much Ian, Alex, Freddie and the rest of the staff. xx
This stay was amazing
We stayed at Ye Spotted Dogge whilst visiting Portsmouth, the hotel was beautiful with so much history and character, Ian the owner and Alex his right hand man were welcoming and super helpful, happy to help in anyway, and gave a great recommendation for restaurant. We stayed in the Red room with so much history and beautiful decor from the 16th century, the bathroom was in the room up a small stair case and beautifully modern. We only had time to stay one night, but we will definitely be heading back there and recommending to friends as was such beautiful experience.A must for anyone, can’t recommend highly enough.
Beautiful week end catching up with friends
We love this place. It’s our second visit and every aspect was wonderful. From the friendly welcome to the fabulous breakfast. We had a comfortable large bed that was perfect. The location is excellent as you can easily walk around all Portsmouth had to offer. From the lovely shopping centre to the historical dockyard. We will be back and there isn’t many places we would go back to.
Fantastic
The whole experience was amazing
Fantastic Rooms, Service and Location
We stayed for a night in the Thomas room on the top floor. The room is very comfortable, has a bath and shower, a complimentary tea and coffee tray with bottled water and biscuits. As the room overlooks their garden it was quiet. The hosts are lovely and serve up a great continental breakfast with fresh coffee and strong tea.The location is within 10 minutes walk of the Guildhall and Central Portsmouth. An extra bonus is the hotel provides a free 24 hour parking permit for the road outside. Will definitely book Ye Spotted Dogge again.
Wonderful stay!
This beautiful hotel is a hidden gem. Ian & Alex and the most welcoming host and a mind of historic knowledge of the area & building. Renovated to a very high standard in keeping with the buildings history it’s like stepping back in time but with the modern luxuries. The bed was the most comfortable we’ve have ever slept in. The breakfast (although a cold buffet style) was ample, quality & very tasty and so much choice including smoked salmon, boiled eggs, pastries & toast. We look forward to another stay and trying another of the beautifully decorated bedrooms.
Top class
Delightful stay. Small Hotel with lots of atmosphere and Ian and alex were super helpful, attentive and friendly. Great location within walking distance of everything we were visiting. Lots of choice for breakfast and good choice of gin at bar! Garden looked amazing and would imagine summer here is great. Will return.
Wonder in all ways
Gorgeous historic building in a great central location, with a very gracious host and extremely thoughtful staff. A truly delicious, varied continental breakfast, with very fresh fruit and pastries. Very comfortable bed and linens. Very spacious and modern bath.Everything was immaculate and attractively decorated. A great value for what you get.

This hotel is an amazing gem the staff and host are warm and friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. The room is completely amazing we loved it. Breakfast was superb cannot fault this hotel would definitely recommend and stay again
Wonderful Stay in a Characterful Room
We had an absolutely lovely short stay in this hotel. The rooms are fantastic and so full of character. We were helped with everything we needed and treated so well. We will definitely be staying here again some time!
Stunning!
We stayed for one night in this beautiful building which is steeped in History. We stayed in the China room which one can only describe as stunning! I highly recommend. Thankyou Ian and Alex!
Historic Vibes
Fabulous stay in this historic building, which is only a short walk from the dockyard and HMS Victory.Owner and staff were very helpful.Breakfast was absolutely first classOur room was full of character
Wish We Had Stayed Longer
My partner and I stayed here for two nights and could not have asked for a better stay. The whole building is beautiful and full of rich history. Our room was really comfortable and Ian and his team made us feel so welcome.Location is perfect and we definitely will book again.

Wonderful :)
Our stay at Ye Spotted Dogge was wonderful from start to finish. We were able to park outside the hotel and were greeted very warmly. We stayed in the 'Red Room' which manages to blend being truly comfortable with the most fantastic sense of history. The whole hotel is fascinating and beautifully maintained and decorated. The bar, garden and breakfast room are fabulous as was the breakfast. The hosts couldn't have been more welcomimg and we hope to stay again!
Excellently situated upmarket b&b and lots of history
Ye Spotted Dogge is a high quality, unique b&b with a lot of history. The building and rooms have been beautifully restored and appointed in sympathy with its background.Gunwharf Quays and historic Portsmouth are an easy walk. If you want a decent night’s sleep with quality accommodation and close proximity to these areas without the risk of noisy clientele at the nearby big chain hotels this is perfect. There’s no bespoke parking on site but don’t let this put you off because you will be given a ticket so you can park just outside the premises for free. This place is well worth a visit - we would certainly return.Things to be aware of:No air conditioning due to nature of the buildingNoisy seagulls will wake you up very early if you leave the windows openWiFi okHave given 4 stars rather than 5 due to price and only continental rather than full English breakfast provided.
Historical Gem
Very interesting place, full of history with very amenable host whom I am sure would share the history upon request. The decor is eclectic and fascinating. The whole place immaculately clean with comfy beds. Buffet breakfast was extensive and fresh.
Fabulous!
This is one of those rare places that you find and return over and over again. The property is excellent and with so much history. Rooms were Fantastic and being able to sit in the garden in lovely surroundings and weather was superb. Breakfast was also excellent.I’ve now returned home to look up the history of the Duke of Buckingham who has a very interesting presence!FabulousSee you again.Nick, Mary, Roger & Tracy.
Great one night stay
Lovely hotel in a great location, we felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. The room was amazing, such a comfortable bed. We had a drink in the garden on the night of our stay, beautiful! Really enjoyed the breakfast, lots of choice. Thank you for a lovely stay
Very deserving a 5*
I think it was a pretty perfect stay. Thanks for your garden too !!I’ll stay again and have no worries recommending you to friends and family .
Wonderful Stay As Newlyweds
My wife and I went straight from our wedding in nearby Titchfield to the Ye Spotted Dogge and had a wonderful stay. As we had notified the hotel that we would be arriving late they were kind enough to wait up for us. Staff were pleasant and friendly throughout our stay and through the booking process. We stayed in the Red Room, which was wonderfully decorated and spacious, with a large and peaceful private bathroon. The large bathtub was a very welcome feature. The continental breakfast in the morning was beyond the standard of any hotel we have previously stayed in, and again the staff were extremely polite and thoughtful. We would have loved to stay longer, and would highly recommenend this hotel.

Lovely
Attentive staff.Lovely room.Lovely breakfast.Lovely garden.Lovely.
A very special expreience
A jewel of refined elegance with a hint of quirkiness and an atmosphere of homeliness, hidden away in old Portsmouth. The very private walled garden is a lovely place to relax with a drink - or breakfast. We'd love to return.
Always a Fabulous stay
Ian and Alex are fantastic hosts and nothing is too much bother for them. They make you feel very welcome. The hotel is a great place with a really lovely garden in the back you can sit back, relax and enjoy some peace
Luxury one night in Portsmouth!
We stayed for my wife’s birthday in this amazing place! From check in to check out everything was perfect! We were looked after so well and the gaden oasis is just a little gem to have drinks! We will visit again soon hopefully!
Ye Spotted Dogge Complimented our Visit
My wife and I had a great couple of days staying at aye Spotted Dogge. A fantastic hotel full of character, and characters. Ian and Alex were great hosts. Just a fantastic place to base yourself if visiting Old Portsmouth
Lovely Find!
This place has so much character. The owner was very welcoming and the rooms were great. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Fascinating building-very enjoyable stay
We chose the hotel on the basis of previous reviews and the fact that we needed to be near to Old Portsmouth during our visit. Our host,Ian explained the very long history associated with the building including its claim to notoriety! It has been tastefully and lovingly restored and has deservedly won an award in 2017 for the quality of the restoration. We had a very comfortable stay. Although the building is very old, the bathroom is well appointed with a good shower/bath. The garden at the back of the hotel is a lovely space and extends quite far back behind the property.Continental breakfast was exceptional with a wide choice of fruit, cold meats, smoked salmon, cheeses and very fresh pastries. We were part of a group of 40 people for whom a dinner was held at the hotel. Ian and his assistant Alex and a small team coped admirably with the occasion. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay .
Fantastic
We stayed as part of our anniversary celebration. The room was very comfortable. We had a party for family and friends and everyone commented on how beautiful the building is and how lovely the food was. My wife and I have no hesitation in recommending.
Olde worlde modern comfort
Very comfortable and oozing character. An oasis of calm after walking all day. Love the hidden courtyard garden for a sundowner. Really friendly hosts. Great location for walking into Old Portsmouth and the Maritime Museum. Thank you!
Lovely B&B!
Ian and Alexander are the ultimate B&B hosts! They took such good care of us! Everything about Ye Spotted Dogge was excellent. The historic building was beautifully decorated and full of character. Easy walking distance to all the sites/restaurants in old Portsmouth. Breakfasts were marvelous with lots of choices. Hated to leave!
nice room
nice place - old quirky, loads of character.Steep staircase to get to the bathroom when staying in the red room. Bathroom is good with & has a great bath. We were disappointed to find out that a full english breakfast wasn't an option either. Instead the only hot food available was toast. We should have read the description
Superb Getaway
We stayed in the Red Room, steeped in history as is the entire house, for one night. What a truly memorable and enjoyable experience. Ian and his team provided an excellent and personal service from the moment we arrived. Ian assisted us in advance with additional information requests, including somewhere good and local to eat. The room was lovely and we both slept like logs on the VERY comfortable mattress.Nothing was too much trouble and we felt so welcome. The hotel is spotless and the bathroom gorgeous with its funky bath! This was definitely a super find and we will be staying here again. Thank you so much for making our very brief trip away very special.
Fantastic!
We absolutely loved Ye Spotted Dogge; the history, the decor, the atmosphere, the breakfast, and the location. We particularly enjoyed having a relaxing drink (or two) at the bar. We hope to return soon!
Packed with history plus some modern conveniences!
We were given the stay as a gift for our wedding and chose to redeem it for one of our 30ths. We stayed in the Red Room. We are very interested in 17th Cenutry history and the building has this and so much more - we were wow-ed by the 14th century pannelling and Tudor hinges. The Jacuzzi bath added some modern luxury and the continental but comprehensive breakfast buffet in the morning was served in a beautiful dining room. Definitely a treat for us but would recommend to history buffs for a special occasion.
Excelente
Very attentive, super comfortable super hospitality!
Very relaxing, friendly & helpful
Awesome building history with incredible stories. Very well restored in a quiet part of Portsmouth accessible to the main sites
First class
We had a great time. Beautiful room, very comfy four poster bed, and amazing breakfast. Loved the private bar for a civilised drink before dinner. If you've come to Old Portsmouth particularly for the history and architecture I would highly recommend Ye Olde Spotted Dogge
An excellent hotel
First time staying at the hotel but it was an excellent experience. The room was very nice, clean and well presented. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the very friendly staff are always happy to help. The included breakfast was delicious and very filling. Will be sure to book again next time I’m in Portsmouth. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Revisit?
An obvious candidate for "Recommendation" to others...and "Return visit" from us!
Unique and Fabulous
We really enjoyed staying in this fabulous little hotel. It was truly unique which made it such a treat to stay here. The history of the building was so interesting and it has been restored and decorated to a very high standard. The welcome and service was outstanding and the breakfast was excellent. We would highly recommend staying here.
Fantasic Gem to Find !
we had a lovely stay and what an amazing place.fully of history and cozy and quainta fantastic bar, great staff, very welcoming and to top it off a great breakfast !we will be coming back again !!!
Wedding night stay
We stayed in the red room on the night of our wedding at the nearby Square Tower. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful getting us checked in late and us arriving late after the wedding had finished. The building is stunning and the decor beautiful. The room was wonderful, so comfortable and the jacuzzi bath a really great. Breakfast was delicious and we were so well looked after. We hope to be back for our first wedding anniversary next year. Thank you!
Great spot in Old Portsmouth
Lovely property with lovely hosts. We stayed in the Red Room which was above the bar so pretty noisy, not surprising given the fabric of this old building. Bar shut at 11pm so not really a problem. Amazing bed and wonderful bathroom. Continental breakfast was delicious. We'll definitely be back.
Wonderful stay
A beautiful room in a fabulous hotel. Excellent breakfast and friendly service.Ideal location too.Would thoroughly recommend
A real historical treasure
Most memorable stay, very friendly staff and nothing too much trouble, every need catered for. It’s great to see there are still hotels like this out there.
A unique, special place!
We couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay to compliment our wonderful wedding at the Square Tower. Ye Spotted Dogge is a beautiful mix of valuable past history with present day luxury accommodation. Any minor faults or quibbles are dealt with promptly by the attentive hosts. It was a privilege to stay in such a beautiful building. Thank you.
A wonderful oasis in Old Pompey
2 wonderful nights in the red room. Great history , lovely decor , super hospitality with the right balance ofservice v friendliness. Historic Portsmouth a mere 10 mins walk away.
An excellent stay!
A very comfortable, well appointed, clean and quiet room.Breakfast was from a very good continental style choice.
the most welcoming hotel in Portsmouth
Myself, my Wife Jackie and several friends stayed, at this utter gem of a hotel I think for the 4th time on Friday 5h November. The lovely decor is clear to see from the pictures however, what can't be seen without a visit is the incredibly warm welcome and the nothing is too much trouble service that meets every guest. The small private bar is the perfect gathering point and even re opens when we return from a night out! can't really imagine staying anywhere else when visiting Pompey. Great job Ian!!
Recent stay
A little treasure we cannot fault this hotel the rooms are all special in their individual style without detracting from the traditional feel. Nothing is too much trouble for Ian and his team we love it here and always look forward to staying. Highly recommend.
AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT
EVERYTHING was amazing, honestly the only issue we had was the floors and walls being thin however that was very minor and cant be changed but apart from that everything was so fantastic and honestly i couldn't fault it at all, from the room to the staff to the breakfast everything was 10/10 and met our every needs especially as its only a 5 minute walk from gun wharf quays! would 100% recommend.
Perfect base for exploring Portsmouth
Booked for weekend for first trip to Portsmouth.Ye Dogge made for exceedingly comfortable visit. Both the public and private rooms are first rate. Small bar, with Alexander attending, is special.Location is short 10 minute walk to main harbor attractions. But there are also local pub, coffee shop, etc. on the block.
Superb
Great place - a warm and friendly welcome, amazing bedrooms, super bar and excellent breakfast. Nothing was too much trouble and the building itself is a labour of love.
Amazing
This is the best hotel I’ve stoped in , all the rooms in the keeping of the steep history of it’s time so can’t recommend this establishment enough, also Ian and Alex can’t do enough to help with your stay .
Fabulous
Ian is a super lovely host. Really enjoyed our stay and will be back in the future.
A wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel
We had the most wonderful stay with you, such a beautiful room and house. The continental breakfast was excellent and there was plenty of choice. Easy to park and you can get a parking permit for the duration of your stay from the hotel for free.
Very cosy charming and high quality boutique hotel - loved it!
This is a real find. I was down for the Goodwood Revival meeting and decided at the last minute to stay here on the Thursday night. i wish i had found it earlier and booked nights for the whole weekend - it was delightful. The team are super helpful and friendly, the hotel is a genuine old ‘ beautiful building (with a fascinating back story - ask to see the dagger!) and the bar area so nice and cozy I had to prise myself out of it. Breakfast too was super quality fresh and delicious. If you are looking for an Olympic swimming pool or 5 star chain hotel type facilities then you will be disappointed - that’s not what this does - but if you want the most relaxing and genuine experience then you just cant fault it. I loved it and will be back!
Delightful stay
A lovely short break in this Hotel. Made very welcome on arrival by Ian. Lots of history at the property. Beautiful decor and room very comfortable and clean. Very nice bathroom. Great choice at breakfast. Delightful courtyard where we sat in the early evening after the days activities. Also a night cap in the lovely little bar. Would thoroughly recommend.
Excellent one-night stay. Could not have wished for more.
Lovely quirky small historic hotel in Old Portsmouth. Within walking district of most attractions, including the Historic Dockyard with HMS Victory and King henry VIII's ship The Mary Rose and the Southsea seafront. Very friendly owner and staff with comfortable bed and excellent breakfast selection to suit all tastes. We would thoroughly recomend The Olde Spotted Dogge for a wonderful stay!! Five stars all the way.
Brecon
Enjoyable stay. made to feel welcome. Comfortable bed and enjoyable breakfast.
Fabulous stay
We stayed 2 nights in the Thomas room. Very comfortable stay in a lovely quiet room overlooking the beautiful courtyard garden. The team made us very welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay perfectly situated in the old town near Gunwharf and the Dockyard. We will be back.

Amazing
Amazing place lovely people best place I stayed in Portsmouth amazing rooms
Excellent Location and service
Ian and his team did a wonderful job of caring and being attentive to our needs. We would visit again for sure.
Lovely stay
My Husband I stayed over night at ye spotted dogge and really loved the history of the ace . We spent out weekend immersed in Tudor maritime history and the atmosphere of the hotel really added to that. The room was nicely decorated fresh and clean . The bar was pleasant with its old oak beams and staff friendly and obliging . Breakfast was good the be selection of food was lovely, coffee was quite strong. I was not aware that there was no traditional cooked breakfast available but other than that Breakfast was good.
Lovely stay
We stayed for just one night in this beautiful house.Lots of character and history, beautiful garden and nothing was too much trouble for the owner. We will definitely return.
Simply wonderful
A really beautiful place to stay. The room was spotlessly clean and contained all those little touches that make your stay feel a little bit special. The courtyard garden was looking absolutely glorious stocked with a terrific variety of both native and exotic shrubs, a great place to enjoy a morning coffee. The breakfast was both plentiful and delicious. Well done to the team at the Dogge and thank you.
All Perfect!
A fabulous hotel rich in history and character enhanced by the hugely welcoming owner. We enjoyed drinks on arrival in the beautiful flower filled courtyard and later a night cap in the cosy bar.The rooms exceeded expectation as did the whole experience. Will definitely be back for another relaxing stay.Thank you to all at Ye Spotted Dogge
Fabulous visit to historic Old Portsmouth
This is an absolutely beautiful B&B to stop in at if you want to explore Portsmouth and its fabulous dockyard.A stunning, historic building, impeccably managed and run.Delightful!
Nice hotel
On arrival we was welcomed by a very friendly member of staff we was offered a drink on the house and the room was lovely. Can’t fault the hotel very nice decor and very clean rooms, unfortunately in the morning we were quiet disappointed with the continental breakfast and there was no cooked breakfast specially after paying £240.00 for the night
Our stay
A wonderful find!! Comfortable cosy stepped In history the host and all the team were so helpful and not to busy to chat and make you feel at home. We will return.
Beautiful Hotel
We would highly recommend staying here. The hotel has beautiful facilities and grounds and the staff were very attentive. It’s also close to Gun Wharf Quays for lots of shopping, eating and drinking.
Great spots!
What a wonderful find. A lovely quiet and cool courtyard. Well located and full of character and history. The staff were friendly, attentive and fun. Try the Red too!
A perfect stay for history, comfort and welcome
We have only just discovered this gem and are very excited about the prospect of future stays! You will be looked after the moment you arrive by brilliant hosts and lovely staff. We stayed in the red room full of history and a monumentally comfortable bed, A lovely garden and bar and a cosy feel with limited rooms to create an atmosphere where people are happy to exchange a story or top tip for your next visit!
A 5-Star Gem of a Hotel in Old Portsmouth
We booked Ye Spotted Dogge whilst on an overnight stay in Portsmouth...Situated in 'Old Portsmouth' and what a delight......we were met by Alex who welcomed us and showed us to our room...we were in the Oak Room....very traditional with oak beams and a very comfortable bed...Bathroom was modern and very large and perfect. We sat in the courtyard having a drink and it was an oasis of quiet and a real bonus...Hotel was quiet and breakfast was served in the dining room...a full continental breakfast which was fresh and full of choice...no need for a cooked breakfast...toast, coffee and juice served by Ian the owner who was attentive and when asked gave us some history about the building...we could not have been happier with our choice of hotels...we will definitely go back when we return to Portsmouth...Thank you Ian and Alex...you made our stay one to remember.
Perfect little boutique hotel
Ye Spotted Dogge epitomises what a small, private boutique hotel should be like. The rooms are incredibly comfortable and the service is all very understated and unobtrusive.Would wholeheartedly recommend it.[The only minor issue is with parking, which is a citywide problem in Portsmouth: the hotel will thankfully give you a visitor permit for the residents parking bays on the street but you might end up having to park several minutes walk away]
Portsmouth Break
Loved our stay at this beautiful property. Lovely breakfast and very helpful host. We would highly recommend this as a place to stay in Portsmouth.
Lovely Historic hotel
Thanks to all the team at ye spotted dogge we had a lovely stay in a great room.
Superb!
We loved our short (one night) stay at Ye Spotted Dogge - we were warmly welcomed and looked after, the facilities were excellent. The history of the building is fascinating and it felt like we were living it! We would definitely recommend a stay there.
A brilliant cosy spot
Ye Spotted Dogge was so beautiful and such a quaint little find, the staff were all welcoming, Alex made sure we had a great stay and have us a free glass of wine in the evening to celebrate - thank you Alex, you are a star! :) x
Amazing
Such a beautiful place with the loveliest hosts. Had the best time enjoying this quirky little boutique hotel. Beautiful rooms, spottlessly clean, hospitality of the hosts was amazing and made our stay absolutely perfect. Thank you
Lovely place to stay.
We stayed in Portsmouth for the weekend to go to the Historic Dockyard. Ye Spotted Dogge was close to shops, restaurants, and the Dockyard. It was about a ten-minute walk away on a quiet street. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom had a large bathtub. The continental breakfast was delicious and the entire house was beautifully decorated. I highly recommend it!

What a stunning property in the perfect Location.Very professional team and extremely courteous. Our room was prepared perfectly with everything we needed. We enjoyed the chatting to other guests and staff who were all very friendly.Breakfast was fantastic and a superb selection. We felt safe as we could see the hotel was clean and they had plenty of Covid safe procedures in place. We will be coming back soon. Thank you all.
Brilliant as usual
We have stayed at this hotel a number of times now and every time we go there we are made very welcome and always looked after - like home from home
Fabulous
Just a beautiful hotel with lovely staff, couldn’t recommend it enough. Just a shame we didn’t have more time to spend there.
Fabulous short stay
Simply loved our stay here. The hotel is stunningly beautiful . Elegant and charming in every sense. Considering the current Covid-19 situation and the impact to the hospitality industry the owners have taken considerable care for the safety of their guests yet still manage to make you feel spoilt in this magnificent bubble at their hotel. Highly recommended.
Comfortable and quirky and perfect location
Lovely hotel, with very friendly staff and perfect central position. We stayed in the Red Room, which has 17th century wood panelling and very interesting period furnishing. Highly recommended!
Wow Wow, Fantastic
A great and very warm welcome from Ian & Alex. What a house! What a fantastic room, and a lovely cooling, secluded garden. Nothing seems to much trouble from the hosts. Including a personnel history of the house, and you need to hear that. Want a taxi? recommended restaurant? things to do? and see? just ask. I felt very spoilt staying here.
Our stay.
A great experience! Very nice staff.
Brilliant night\'s stay
Marvellous hospitality and jaw dropping decor - the place is full of history! Had a brilliant one night stay and the Ye Spotted Dogge - only wish it was for longer.
Perfect.
Terrific new find, having made many day trips to Portsmouth over the years, delighted to have found this hotel to stay overnight. Great location- be it for shopping at Gunwharf Quay or visiting the Historic Dockyard & the Cathedral. Helpful & friendly staff, super private bar with great G&T's, quirky & beautifully appointed rooms & easy to park outside the front door. Will 100% be visiting again.
Superb!
Beautiful, historical building, with very welcoming and helpful host. Breakfast was lovely, with a great selection.Whole experience was so good, we stayed another night. Can't wait to visit again!
Long Weekend
Quirky Hotel, a hidden Gem, 10 Min walk to the Harbour.Staff couldn't do enough.Would highly recommend.Would stay again.
Excellent
We had a lovely night at the hotel. Very warmly welcomed and cared for during our stay. The hotel is Beautiful inside and out.I would throughly recommend staying here.
Fabulous
Exquisite room, attention to detail, friendly staff, beautiful small hotel
Birthday Break
Another lovely friendly stay at the Spotted Dog in Old Portsmouth. Ian and his staff are all really polite, and the breakfast is amazing.Very clean and tidy rooms. We will be back again
not there
I canceled that reservation last month.I never stayed there.Maybe next year.
Fantastic!
We spent two nights here while visiting family in Portsmouth and really loved this hotel. Ian is a very attentive host - after a gruelling drive in heavy rain from south Wales, I was so delighted by his offer to take my car keys and find a parking space for me. The breakfast spread was delicious, and we loved the relaxed pace. We were joined by friends for one night, and they also loved the atmosphere and style. The whole weekend break was such a treat - highly recommended.
Exceptional
History, fantastically welcoming hosts, beautiful surroundings, comfortable rooms and a great city. Exceeded all expectations. The only place to stay in Portsmouth.Real living history. Wonderful 3days
The Best

Me Mark Langmead
What a wonderful place to stay. Ian and Alex were really polite and made my wife and l very welcome. The Oak room we stayed in was clean and lovely , and a fabulous new on suit bathroom. The breakfast was super. I would strongly recommend this small cosy hotel to stay. Very well located in Portsmouth.
Excellent
Characterful hotel with a wealth of history, ideally sited for a visit to the historic dockyard which is highly recommended.Comfortable, well appointed rooms with the usual tea/ coffee making facilities. There is also a small well stocked bar for the residents. The staff couldn’t be more helpful.
Lovely place, feel like a queen
This is a lovely re-modeled house from the 15th Century, where one can feel transported back in time and yet enjoy the full comfort of a modern hotel. The lovely breakfast completes the experience. The owner is also extremely helpful and thoughtful. highly recommended.
Well thought out
Ye Spotted Dogge was a delicious step back in time, but with the convenience of all the modern accoutrements. The staff are friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable - I look forward to my next stay.
Quality weekend in Portsmouth
This hotel is perfect for a quality stay, We stayed in the red room it’s like going back in time with but with all the luxury, we enjoyed our stay , will definitely use again if in Portsmouth
Lovely hosts, room & location
This was a wonderful stay with super hospitable hosts and a meticulously restored period property. The bathtub in the room may be somewhat impractical for a quick clean, but I loved it and it does help with enforcing "not being in a hurry".The rooms are not well sound proofed from each other (although traffic noise from outside was not very noticeable) so I would recommend that people bring ear plugs if they are troubled by hearing sounds from other rooms.
cosy and incredibly kind staff
cosy and incredibly kind staff
Fabulous
Booked this on the basis of great reviews for a couple of nights in the Oak room which was lovely. Beautiful house, and everyone so very helpful. Will definitely be back.
Only superlatives apply
My middle son has the good fortune to be at university in Portsmouth and I’ve been visiting him a couple of times a year since he started, either along or with my mother. I booked a small and comfortable hotel in Old Portsmouth by chance on my first trip and have used it happily ever since.I spotted Ye Spotted Dogge four years ago when it was still a private house and was intrigued by its age, history and the apparently elegant interiors.I noticed when it went up for sale and briefly mused on viewing it.Two years on, my usual hotel is full up on my second night and I immediately know where to turn. And my partner and I are not in any tiny way disappointed.A superb welcome from Alex who provided a quick tour of the breakfast room with walled garden view and comfortable lounge. Gorgeous bedroom complete with fresh yellow roses, fresh milk in the minibar, luxury bedsheets, bath sheets and robes. A welcome drink in the cosy bar downstairs before heading out for dinner with my son. Warm welcome back from Alex on return, excellent night’s sleep, delicious fresh breakfast served by the kind and understated owner and good wishes exchanged for the rest of the day as we headed off to the Cathedral for Sunday Service. All in all a perfect stay.
Ye Spotted Dogge
Superb facility, masses of character, owners very helpful and will definitely return
Lovely room, welcoming hosts
We stayed at Ye Olde Spotted Doge's Red Room, which is a fabulous room, full of character and history. We felt as if we were right inside a history movie. The bed is exceptional and the jacuzzi bathtub is large enough for two. Would highly recommend for a traveling couple, although accessibility could be an issue.
fabulous hotel
This is simply a wonderfully welcoming unique place to stay. the small bar is such a cosy place to chill out and the rooms are all spotless and well appointed. my only small criticism is that even in winter breakfast is only continental although it has to be said that this is very well presented.
A fab hotel to stay in
This is our second visit to this hotel and yet again the hosts Ian and Alex were great. Will definitely be staying again.
Perfect base for experiencing historic Portsmouth
Perfectly positioned in Old Portsmouth, a pleasant stroll to the Naval Dockyard. Rooms and building really historically interesting.Ian (owner) and Alex (barman) extremely friendly and welcoming, with some remarkable tales (but not at all pushy).Highly recommended if you want to get a feel for Portsmouth history.
Wonderful place to stay
This is a little gem in Portsmouth really nice place to stay with character + comfort . Lovely bar with very friendly + efficient staff . Would stay there anytime.
Beautiful Accommodation
We had booked Ye Spotted Dog as a stop over when arriving at the Port before we travelled home.It was the most wonderful surprise, the most beautiful accommodation, everything was thought of. Our room was so comfortable with absolutely everything you would wish for and it was great to hear all about the history of the building from Ian.We will definitely be returning.
History galore
Lovely place soaked in history. Lovely hosts who filled us in on the building and surrounding area. Only downfall was access to bathroom from red room not easy and bath was very noisy. Also bar area could do with soundproofing as we could hear every word spoken when in our room. Didn't spoil our lovely stay.
Fab Stay
Hidden little gem of a hotel with fab staff, friendly local people in an ideal location. Will definitely be going back
A relaxing stay
We arrived hot and tired on a very warm day and were greeted with a welcoming drink in the beautiful secluded garden at the rear of this hotel. The whole atmosphere of this hotel is calm and relaxing, with excellent accomodation and very friendly service. A small and welcome detail in the room was the complimentary bottle of fresh milk that was provided in the minibar fridge and the bottles of water - in additon to the usual tea and cofee making items. Also an electric fan was provided in the room as the weather warmed up, even though we had not asked for one.The hotel is very well finished with period-style furnishings and a comfortable bed. Breakfast was excellent.
A great historical stay in Portsmouth
Ian and Alex were very welcoming and made our stay in Portsmouth exceptional. If I return to Portsmouth, this is where I’d choose to come back to.
Ye spotted dogge
We loved the hotel very friendly so helpful with park . I will certainly recommend to all my friends .
Lovely stay
The hotel is situated very well and the staff is very nice.Room are as pictures, so they are lovely
David and Leslie Lake
What a joy. If you are traveling to Portsmouth you must stay at Ye Spotted Dogge. Ian and his team, Alex and Freddie, took such great care of us. Their hospitality is unprecedented. The hotel is a wonderful mix of history and beauty. We so look forward to our next visit to Portsmouth and Ye Spotted Dogge. Thanks Ian.
Ye best place to stay in Portsmouth
If your going to Portsmouth, make sure to stay at least one night here, especially in the Red room! The whole place is stunning and has such an interesting history, dating back to 1500s! The staff are also extremely friendly and welcoming, they really couldn’t do enough to make our stay more special! The location is also excellent!
Lovely old hotel
Spent a wonderful couple of days here for our son’s graduation. Had 2 very different rooms in this lovely hotel close to old Portsmouth and very convenient for Gunwharf Quays and the historic Dockyards.Very pleasant staff, lovely garden.Would definitely stay again.
A weekend to visit family and see the Mary Rose
Not sure now how we found out about Ye Spotted Dogge, but what a gem! An ideal location for exploring old Portsmouth and a beautifully and lovingly restored historic building. The owner/proprietor and his staff were very friendly, welcoming and informative. Breakfast was excellent. This was our 6th short break staying in hotels this year and we certainly plan to stay here again. We cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. Thank you Ian.
Beautiful
My partner & I stayed for one night in this delightful & beautifully renovated House. The renovation has been carried out to the highest of standards, paying particular attention to detail. The hospitality was very warm and friendly. The bar is superb as was the service. Our room was stunning, very traditional& very comfortable. The rear garden is elegant, charming full of atmosphere and very tranquil.Thank you for making us feel welcome. We will definitely stay again.
Graduation
Our second stay in 'Ye Spotted Dogge' did not disappoint. Lovely rooms and charming hosts. Thanks for a welcoming stay.David and Melanie Essex.
Hidden Gen in Pompey
Always a pleasure to stay at this fabulous boutique hotel. it really is one of Portsmouth's hidden gems and now first choice when visiting Pompey. Great rooms, great bar, great garden and great service. Just wish there was a hot breakfast option!!
Great stay, loved it
If you’re looking for peace and tranquility in an idyllic setting, stay here.Staff were friendly, room was very special, garden was beautiful, breakfast was lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Beautifulsmall hotel, absolutely outstanding
From the moment you step into Ye Spotted Dog, you know that you are entering a very special place. History and charm ooze out of the walls and yet it has all of the facilities you could want from a modern hotel. The snug bar is the cosiest most welcoming you could imagine. The walled garden is like a best in show winner at the Chelsea Flower Show. The bedrooms are beautiful, very comfy beds with ultra-modern luxury bathrooms. The owner Ian is the loveliest man who will take the time to help you with any need you might have. Absolutely outstanding.
Ye spotted dogge
Good location, Welcome drink on arrival by our host while we sat in the beautiful garden. Room was lovely along with the rest of the building which is steeped in history and furnished as such. In my opinion, one of the best b&b in portsmouth. Excellent
Excellent
A small, comfortable, hotel with a mix of rooms, well situated within easy walking distance of main attractions. Very friendly owner serving a good continental breakfast.
Very Highly Recommended
What a unique hotel with a great owner and team! Our party of four arrived after a short tour of Portsmouth. The hotel is hidden in plain site and can be difficult to find even though it stands out being a different color than the surrounding buildings. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by Ian the owner. I’m a life time elite member of a major hotel brand and I can honestly say I’ve never been treated as well as Ian and the folks there treated us. Alex offered refreshments and we sat in the beautiful garden where Ian was kind enough to talk about the history of the hotel and his involvement in making it into the beautiful accommodation it is today. After dinner we returned to hotel and once again enjoyed the garden. Our room was the smaller of two but was very comfortable, clean while reflecting the time period of long ago. The bathroom was like stepping into a time warp, very modern and up to date. Breakfast was outstanding and the room well decorated. If you only like chain hotels don’t stay here but if you want to treated like family have an incredible experience in a building that’s been throughly renovated with an incredible owner and team stay here! Other info: steps, we were on the top floor, so you have to climb steps, no A/C, each room has a small fan, it was in the 80Fs but we had no issues sleeping. Only 6 rooms, so book early. Very good WiFi. If we return to Portsmouth we will stay here
Brilliant stay
Beautiful hotel, really pleasant and helpful staff. Alex was lovely and informative. Ian the owner was very helpful. Absolutely lovely place and people.
Chinese room
Beautiful building, amazing room, excellant attention to detail. Total comfort, plenty of space. Charming garden with peace and quiet and beautiful flowers and plants. First class choices for breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. As a person with arthritic fingers, found cups rather difficult to hold as handles too small, worried about dropping them. A real pleasure and indeed treat to be in such an historic building that is kept to such a high standard. A thoroughly fantastic weekend with the bonus of parking and the convenience of being within walking distance to so many things.
Wonderful stay in historic building
Totally worth treating yourself to a night or two here to enjoy the beautifully decorated rooms, the inkeeper’s stories over a drink in the well stocked bar and just to soak in a place dripping in history
One of a Kind!
We chose the Ye Spotted Dogge for an overnight stay in Portsmouth. After a late afternoon ride from Heathrow, Ian, the proprietor, greeted us with a tasty Sauvignon Blanc and a talk about the hotel's history. It's worth the trip just to hear its history!Centrally located, a nearby bistro was suggested and was good and reasonably price. Both Ian and his employee genuinely were interested in assisting us with the details of of stay. The 'hotel' is unique and charming.
Perfect stay
The place was even better than expected! A small well-run boutique hotel with only a few rooms but with a lot of history. Friendly staff, well-stocked bar and exquisite breakfast. Worth a detour as they say in the Michelin guide.
Great stay highly recommended!
Had a fantastic time here. The hotel is beautiful and the staff cannot do enough for you. The rooms are of a high standard and everywhere is extremely clean and well kept. It is also in a great location for shopping and eating. We would definitely stay again
Lovely stay
We came to Portsmouth for a weekend and had a lovely time staying in Ye Spotted Dog. The location was great for the historic area of town and our room was beautifully comfortable. The breakfast was also particularly good! We will definitely return.

Fantastically renovated historic property with welcoming and helpful owner and staff.
Our second stay in this beautiful old building
This is our second stay in thisbeautifully restored building in the past six months. We love the history and character of the spacious rooms and friendly staff. Its a great location for exploring Old Portsmouth and the dockyard.

Two night Oak Room stay for my wedding!
Had a fantastic stay at this hotel, choosing it for its beauty, location and history. Ian incredibly helpful and eager to assist in any way. Alex brilliant too, offering to go an d turn my car lights off when I was preparing for my wedding! Rest off staff also lovely and so genuinely pleased to see you. I had professional photos taken in various rooms and the garden before I left for the wedding, they will no doubt be stunning so thanks to Ian for allowing this! We will no doubt be back! Weekend Away
Great place to stay. Close to all the sight seeing. Quirky(due to its age) but a lovey place to stay. Lovely restoration on the building. The owner and staff were amazingly friendly and very welcoming. Would defiantly recommend.
Fantastic experience as never before
Really good accommodation, hope we could come back again, value for money!
Great stay at the Spotted Dogge
Very warm welcomeand a very informative chat about the History of this quite amazing find inPortsmouth. The two rooms we stayed in were excellent in every way.We opted for the roll top bath as it’s quite unusual.A big thank you to all the guys at the Dogge.A very pleasant stay indeed.Gary&Lorraine.
Our recent stay
We recently stayed at Ye Spiotted Dogge as a bass for Christmas shopping at Gunwhatf and found Ian the perfect host and the whole environment a peaceful retreat from the pressures of present buying! The room was amazing, very clean and with excellent facilities; Ian was the perfect host and Alex makes the best Bloody Mary this side of Mayfair! We’d also recommend the Koh Thai restaurant nearby which Ian recommended and served amazing food in a cosy atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back.
Thank you hope to visit again
We had a marvellous stayThe hotel is superb, full of character history and charm.Everything is superb quality, the rooms the breakfast and the hospitality. We wish we has been able to stay longer. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The breakfast was wonderful.

Very welcoming into a most comfortable house with much of historical interest. The continental breakfast was wide-ranging and very well provided with requested warmed croissants and toast. We would certainly return if we have occasion in the future to re-visit Portsmouth.Thank you!
Fantastic Accommodation
Fantastic, character filled accommodation, located easy walking to Gunwharf Quay and Naval museum, outstanding breakfast and fabulous host. A great experience and would totally recommend
Fabulous Character
Great accommodation with immense character. In a great location with very friendly staff and welcoming feel.Only disappointment was the lack of a cooked breakfast. Would definitely stay again and would recommend to others.
Excellent Hotel
Excellent hotel.Staff very helpful and friendly.Beautiful rooms, with attention to detail. Breakfast was very good, with plenty of choices. Great location.
Fabulous
Thoroughly recommend this hotel, great hosts, beautiful building and luxurious rooms. Fantastic breakfast and great location.
WOW!!
My partner and I stayed in the red room the pictures of this room did not do it justice! We will defiantly be coming back to stay!I would encourage everyone to stay here we were made to feel very welcome and loved the champagne welcome drink.
Great find
Very hospitable welcome, lovely glass of champagne in their very cosy bar. Overall first impression, like walking into the past, beautifully presented. Comfortable mattress in a very quaint bedroom. Delicious breakfast friendly service through out. We would stay again.
Brilliant stay
Fantastic stay in a absolutlety unique hotel. Comfortable room, lovely small bar to relax in and great hospitality. Would highly recommend Ye Spotted Dogge as a real oppertunity to experiance a real bit of British history.
Going back in time at Ye Spotted Dogge
Ye Spotted Dogge is a step back into history. There is a warm welcome from staff with a complementary drink when you arrive and my husband and I enjoyed the talk about the history of the house. The room was not only elegant but also comfortable with lovely finishing touches. Breakfast was continental with plenty of choice. A lovely hotel in a perfect location.
Excellent Accommodation
Very warm welcome, complimentary welcome drink, we were given tour of the house which the owner is rightly proud of, we had the Red Room which has been fully restored relating to its history. The accommodation has a small but well stocked bar. Excellent buffet breakfast and service throughout. Only a ten minute walk to the Quay side shopping centre with its many restaurants.
Brilliant
Wonderful comfortable place to stay with an incredibly interesting history. Very welcoming owner Ian and friendly staff, not to mention a fantastic old bar, and cosy garden. Hope to be back soon.
A Family Gathering
A very enjoyable and interesting hotel.Excellent breakfast.Clean & very comfortable. A touch of English history.Thoroughly recommended.
Excellent
We were made to feel very welcome and were looked after supremely well during our short stay. The breakfasts are amazing. We can't see how anyone could fail to enjoy their stay here. Highest recommendation.
Stunning
Stunning, a beautifully restored historic house ,A lovely atmosphere, very friendly and helpfulHosts.
Interesting
Lovely property, great host. Thought it very expensive for the experience. Also bathroom position not suitable for older guests
Stunning !!!
Stunning . Its a beautiful building both inside and outside with a lovely courtyard garden area to relax in , The whole experience from my greeting , a glass of Tatinger was a classy touch , to the excellent continental breakfast was worth every penny. The recommendations of local restaurants within 5-10 mins walking distance were also top class . I really enjoyed my stay .
Wonderful!
Thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay at Ye Dogge! Beautifully restored and had a warm welcome from Ian who also showed us round and gave us a very interesting history lesson. The Red Room was stunning, beautiful panelling and the biggest bed. All was quality and tasteful. And a fab bathroom tucked away up a tiny wooden staircase with a huge whirlpool bath! We were able to enjoy sitting in the courtyard garden which is delightful. Ian recommended and booked for us a local restaurant Koh Thai yum yum and we finished off our evening in the cosy snug bar at the hotel chatting to locals and quaffing delicious cocktails made by Alex the lovely young bar man who was also friendly, warm and welcoming. Great location to explore all Portsmouth has to offer!
A very nice place to stay
I stayed here with a friend while visiting FoS at Goodwood. It’s a very nice and slightly eccentric hotel with its own little pub. We arrived late borh nights, but of course they opened the pub for us. The manager sat down for a drink as well. I will come back and I highly reccomend this hotel even though it’s a secret I really would have loved to keep for myself.
Unexpected Luxuries
Even after reading reviews we were pleasantly surprised by the history, beauty and charm of the interior and garden area of this beautiful gem.Photos do not do it justice. This is a perfect place to relax and enjoy your surroundings.Comfortable sleeping in the Oak Room as well as large ensuite for the age of the property. Our schedule did not permit us to fully enjoy our unexpected hospitality of our stay.Plan to relax and enjoy your surroundings as well as the people during your stay.
Brilliant stay
We had been looking forward to returning to Portsmouth and our stay at Ye Spotted Dog. From our arrival, after a long tiring journey of 6 hours, we were not disappointed. Everyone was so welcoming and we enjoyed a relaxing drink in the beautiful courtyard. The Red Room was amazing - so big and characterful. The whirlpool. Agh bath soothed the aches of the day. After a walk by the sea the bed was very comfortable and roomy. Breakfast was exactly right and very filling. Staff were so attentive and friendly. All the rooms are quirky and filled with objects that compliment the ethos of the guest house. The situation in historic Portsmouth is brilliant - no need to take the car to get anywhere.Thank you for a wonderful stay we would love to come back. (If you want to know anything about the area ask Alan!!)Debbie and Geoff (Norfolk)

Beautiful hotel
What a fantastic little Gem the Ye spotted dog was, great history behind it and the hospitality was amazing, a very short from the docks and lovely pubs and restaurants, the bedrooms were beautifully designed and the continental breakfast was lovely, highly recommended
Beautifully Historic
A fantastically restored historical pub! The owner, Ian, obviously loves this place and you can really tell in every detail. The staff is lovely and it is a quiet, tranquil place!
Made to feel \'special\' in Buckingham House
We received a warm welcome on arrival plus a glass of champagne. The building is stunning and the room we stayed in was very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed learning about the history of the building and would definitely recommend it to our friends.
Honoured Guest in Historic Inn
This used to be the best Inn to stay in old Portsmouth in the 17th century... unless you were the Duke of Buckingham who was murdered here. It's still the best Inn in Portsmouth, beautifully and thoughtfully restored, with pride and passion. We were welcomed with a handshake, champagne (which we finished off in the quaint relaxing garden), given a history of the Inn (fascinating) before being taken up to the Oak room (perfect).Breakfast, although only continental) was a treat,We were looked after as though we were honoured guests.Thank you - we will return.
Something Special!
This is a hidden gem, situated perfectly to explore Portsmouth. We stayed for just one night in the ‘Chinese Room’ and I must say from walking through the door we felt so welcome and totally looked after.Champagne in the garden in gorgeous sunshine while listening to the history of this special place. Every room beautifully decorated.Big comfortable bed and and tub in the room - what more can you ask for! Breakfast was an ample continental selection which met all of our needs. We loved our stay and hope to return in the not too distant future! Thank you.
Lovely
Spent a few days here. Greeted by the host with a potted history of the building and a lovely glass of bubbly .The room was delightful.Had drinks in the bar which we could take into the beautiful walled garden . Would definitely recommend this hotel
Brief visit to Ye Spotted Dogge
I can't fault this hotel, every detail is beautiful. I felt welcomed and at home and was even offered a complimentary glass of champagne. The room was great, breakfast was very nice and location was ideal!
Fantastic hotel with real atmosphere
8th May 2018: What a gem! This lovely grade 2 listed hotel has recently been sympathetically renovated and has all the modern luxuries while retaining it's original character; it's one of the oldest buildings in the city. The owner met us personally and gave a brief history of the building over a complimentary glass of champaign. The staff were so friendly and helpful, having a real pride in their hotel.Comfortable and quiet rooms, an excellent Buffett style breakfast and a lovely inner garden courtyard made this one of the best hotels we have ever been to.If you are arriving by car it's worth phoning the property when you are near so they can arrange parking for you. The hotel is not obvious as you drive up the high street so plan ahead. We were parked right outside the hotel and provided with a free pass for the evening of our stay and all of the next day.
Recently refurbished and to a very high standard. A lot of thought has obviously gone into the interior design and decorated with the age of the place in mind. There was a lovely sunny courtyard garden where you could relax with lots of potted plants and shrubs. All the rooms were beautifully decorated and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. It also had a very well equipped bar and the continental breakfast was all fresh and tasty. Everything you need for a relaxing break. Also a very short walk to the Quays shopping outlet.
Fantastic hotel with real character and friendly staff.

FANTASTIC
Great hotel with history, character yet with all the modern facilities. Great staff and comfortable/quiet rooms. Breakfast spread was lovely taken in the sunny dinning room which is steeped with history. It may look odd with everyone giving 5 star reviews- we are independent and fully agree- 5 star plus!
Spot on!!!
Ye Spotted Dogge is everything I look for in a hotel. As soon as we arrived we felt welcome and at ease, the building is oozing with history and we were given a short guided tour by the owner as we sipped champagne . There is a great cozy well stocked bar, a beautiful courtyard garden and our room was perfect. The warmest of hosts, the most comfortable room, and a delicious breakfast. If you want an extra special stay in Portsmouth then look no further, this has to be one of the very best in town.
BEST HOTEL IN PORTSMOUTH BY A LONG WAY
I visit Portsmouth 4 times a year to see family and am constantly underwhelmed at the poor quality of hotels on offer in such a lovely city. This hotel is superb and the rooms are amazing. Before you book anywhere else take a look at their website and book a room.steeped in history, outstanding service, the most glorious walled gardens and at a price that gets you little more than a box room in my home town of Brighton. Your hosts Ian and alex have created something very special that will leave you wanting to return again and again. Simply charming. Thank you guys, we will be back.
Superb hotel
Best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Beautiful house with an interesting history. The rooms are perfectly decorated and the owner with staff were just amazing.
Perfect
A lovely so so convenient two night stay near the very center of historic Portsmouth. In a very unique very historic house and garden on a quiet street. Parking was not a problem, in fact we were able to park right outside the front door! Breakfast was delicious and the few hours we spent in the snug bar chatting to the local members made for a very pleasantstay. Ian, Alex and the rest of the team could not do more for us! All you need to do is to find somewhere equally lovely among the variousoptions just a short walk away in town to eat in the evening.
A Real Treat
This is what a hotel should be - beautifully appointed, graciously hosted, luxury as standard and quietly charming. From the personal greeting by Ian, the champagne on arrival presented by Alex, our exquisite room, the warm welcome from the patrons in the bar, to the delicious breakfast after a wonderful night's sleep, Ye Spotted Dogge ticks every single box. Bravo.
Beautiful hotel!!!
Wow! This place is amazing--living history, yet restored to include perfect modern comforts that seamlessly integrate into the 16th century vibe. Ian and Alex run this place like a B&B, which is the highest praise. You are made to feel like an Duke yourself, but you don't have to fear getting assassinated like the famous Duke of Buckingham did on this very spot. I highly recommend staying here. The Red Room is amazing!
UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL VENUE
Stayed for one night great location by Gunwharf Quay. Beautiful old building with lovingly restored rooms. Quaint bar in the building with nice selection of drinks. Great breakfast with whole stay topped off by the great service from the hosts
A REAL GEM
Found this boutique hotel on trip advisor and what a find. Ian and Alex were helpful from the start. I requested dairy and gluten free breakfast and i had so much choice including a pack of biscuits in the room on arrival. The hotel and room were spotlessly clean. The hotel was well located and a short walk to the outlet mall, shops and restaurants and dockyard with lots to see. We parked our car for 3 days and didn't need to move it. The hotel provided us with a free parking badge, on our first night we didn't go out so Ian put together an easy meal of us to eat in the lounge/restaurant - with no notice and it was so delicious. Would definitely recommend to friends and family!
Beautiful hotel
Not your average hotel! The rooms are really beautiful and I loved the bath.
Lovely Treat
We had a wonderful stay here last weekend. It was cold outside but warm and cosy inside, we felt thoroughly spoilt with a lovely welcome, beautiful surroundings and a friendly atmosphere. The position is great just a short walk to local restaurants, pubs and Gunwharf Quays. We will be back !
Historic hotel on a quiet street
The fact that the staff make you feel welcome and the fact that this is a historic building so has a lot of character with quiet comfortable rooms. This is a 15th century building which has recently been converted into a hotel, the rooms are exceptionally comfortable and the one I had has a large and modern bathroom. The management and staff are very helpful and there is a nice bar. The hotel is located on the old town high street but this residential and quiet. You have a 20 min walk to the town center or to the ferry terminals. Because it is an old building there is no lift and there are three floors, however the staff will bring the luggage to the room. This is a very good place to stay in Portsmouth as it has a lot of character which is different to the chain hotels, there is no hotel parking and the only option is to park on the street outside. This hotel has a walled courtyard garden which will be nice in the summer and is a rare find in Portsmouth, the room I had has a minibar fridge and a good TV.
“Comfortable stay in Old Portsmouthâ€
Enjoyed our stay at Ye Spotted Dog which is very central for visiting Portsmouth and is set in a beautiful old building with lots of history and a lovely walled garden. We stayed for only one night but we we were welcomed by the owner on arrival with a complimentary glass of fizz and given a comprehensive history of the building and all of the staff were very helpful and friendly throughout our stay.Would recommend as a place to stay in Portsmouth although the room cost at over £200 per night is a little on the high side for B&B with continental breakfast. However in saying that the continental breakfast is of a particularly high quality with lots of fresh produce and we were kindly allowed a late check out at no additional cost so overall a thumbs up.
Beautiful stay
I can not fault this place. Ian and Alex have created a stay with a personal touch, attention to detail and 100% customer service. Their rooms are incredible, keeping the history of this heritage listed building, while creating a very comfortable stay for their guests. We were upgraded into the red room! What a treat this room is... so much history and so comfortable... the en suite and the bath a huge unexpected treat! From the initial chat with Ian with a complimentary glass of champagne, to the continental breakfast with fine china... our stay has been incredible... best night sleep I have had in a very long time!Simply... book a room... an experience you won’t regret... worth every penny... we wish Ian and Alex all the best with this beautiful business they have created.
A real find!
I loved everything about this gorgeous little hotel. The owner met us at the door and gave us a potted history of the hotel (which was fascinating!) while we drank a complimentary glass of champagne in the lounge. We were then shown to our room, which was beautiful. Dinner reservations were made in a great local restaurant for us and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back!
Wonderful hotel
It was quite by accident that I booked a two-room number in Portsmouth ... And we got into a fairy tale! This is a real historical building, hotel-museum ... As it turned out later, in this house the famous Duke of Buckingham was stabbed !!! All the interiors are decorated with high artistic taste, it is clear that the owner has invested in this part of his soul. Separately worth noting is very friendly staff, we were greeted as family ... did not want to leave ... We spent in this wonderful house 4 days ... I almost forgot to tell about breakfast ...: breakfast is served in English china, a large selection of cheeses , meat sliced, smoked salmon, etc ... freshly baked croissants every morning, a fragrant strawberry. Everything is fresh, seasonal and tasty ... The rooms are very clean, cozy and stylish ...
Cosy little love neat
What a wonderful place to bring your beautiful girlfriend! We arrived on the 13th of October and we were shown to our amazing China room after our complementary champagne (not prosecco) Our hosts Alex and Ian were excellent; extremely friendly and welcoming. We sat out in the garden at night, it was quiet and peaceful and the bar inside is cosy and relaxing to have a few drinks in.The hotel is in Old Portsmouth which is a historic part of Portsmouth, theres a cathedral 200m away which is definitely worth a visit. There’s also a nice restaurant just round the corner called Abar Bistro and they serve up nice food.
Lovely stay at Ye Spotted Dogge
We stopped at 11.15am to get a parking permit but were cordially invited to check in then as our room was ready. We were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne (not prosecco woohoo) and after a little interesting conversation about the history of the lovely establishment we were shown to our room.It was wonderfully historic in feel but with a very modern bathroom - just the ideal combination. We had a drink in the cosy bar after our evening meal, meeting a very pleasant couple and being regaled with great tales by the night manager. The bed was as comfortable as we've ever slept in.Finally the continental breakfast was interesting and delicious. With it's pleasant and central location couldn't have chosen better or recommend more.Service was very friendly without being intrusive.Ideal.Thank you.
Opulent, Elegant & Historical Stay
Alex very welcoming on arrival.Enjoyed some time with Ian in the lounge learning more on the history of the building and Ian's journey in creating this beautiful boutique hotel with complimentary chapangne - beautiful touch. The room was of the quality expected, full mini bar and all the added extras to make the stay warm and welcoming, real fine bone China for tea....how wonderful! Bed very comfortable. The bar within the hotel is small but welcoming.Highlights of the stay were defiantly Alex and Ian and how friendly and helpful they both were. Lots of recommendations and very pleasant. This is a hotel of quality and history and I do believe will attract a particular type of clientele, having said that we will deffinatley be returning next year!
“Exceptional hotel!â€
Ian has done an amazing job of making things contemporary and yet retaining the history of the building.
“Excellent hotelâ€
We felt most welcome at this wonderful little hotel. Our room, steeped in history, was sumptuously decorated and furnished, with a really comfortable bed. Breakfast offered a wide variety and was served in a stunning room looking out onto the garden. Our hosts, Ian and Alex, were most helpful and attentive. The position of Ye Spotted Dogge is perfect for exploring Portsmouth and is within walking distance of many tourist attractions and restaurants.
Good location. Excellent accommodation. Ample cold buffet breakfast. Lots to explore.
A warm welcome. Beautiful building exquisitely & lovingly restored with no expense spared on luxury finishes. All your needs are catered for by clean & smart staff who are not overly attentive. Beautiful walled garden , arranged so you feel you are in your own space sitting among the foliage & soft lighting. A truly relaxing place to stay & one we hope to return to as there is so much history to explore 10 mins walk away at the historic docks & designer shopping at Gunwharf keys with plenty of restaurants to enjoy.
“Excellent. Will definitely return and stay longer next time.â€
Nothing really but our room had a freestanding bath with modesty screen/curtain, I would have preferred a shower but I guess what's good enough for royalty....눇6 bedroom 15th Century Inn in old Portsmouth. Beautifully restored, great rooms and facilities. Superb walled garden with discrete seating areas. Delightful bar open to 'members' as well as guests. Owner and Staff really friendly and helpful. Complementary glass of champagne on arrival and a history lesson of the room we were staying in - ours having been decorated several hundred years earlier (but since discretely updated!) in readiness to receive King Charles 1 but who unfortunately quickly cancelled his reservation upon learning of the murder of his mate the Duke of Buckingham in the pub!
“Exceptional hotel!â€
What an amazing experience! We were greeted by Ian the owner with a glass of champagne and a quick history lesson about the property before being shown to our beautiful room. The staff were exceptional, the decor stunning, brilliant location walking distance from Gunwharf Quays, beautiful garden and a scrummy cold buffet breakfast. We totally loved it â¤ï¸
Loved our stay, Ian and Alex made us feel very welcome and made sure we had everything we needed. Even getting me dairy free options for breakfast after I just mentioned in passing that I don't eat dairy. Such an awesome place with such great history. Cannot wait to go back.
“Great and would visit againâ€
Comfortable and surprisingly organised given it had only opened to guests the day before. Excellent host. Delicious breakfast.
Lovely little hotel with lots of interesting history. Great location for exploring the city's sights
Really friendly welcome by Ian and his team
Night away
Decided to go to old Portsmouth for two days to visit the historical dockyard and other attractions. All hotels that we know were booked so on line came across this guest house. Amazing find. Brilliant welcome. What an amazing house so well restored with such character. Immaculate through out. Intriguing property. Made extra special by the owner who clearly loves this house. Breakfast great. The lady that served us was first class and the gentleman helping. Well worth the money. Short walk to spice island. Bedroom well equipped. Beautiful bathroom .Will be back and recommending to others. The hotel has to be part of our trip and this certainly was. Only bad bit had to leave!!
